My Catalina Island Getaway: Flying In with Maverick

Helicopter views, a harbor full of boats and colorful cocktails on the table. Here’s a little look at my Catalina Island getaway.

I flew in with Maverick Helicopters, then spent time in Avalon taking in the harbor views and stopping for drinks. Between the coastline from the air and the blue water around town, there was plenty to point the camera at.

Flying in with Maverick

For this visit, I arrived by helicopter with Maverick. Headphones on, sunglasses on and a coastline outside the window is quite a way to begin an island getaway.

If flying over is on your wish list too, book ahead and check Maverick’s available departure points and times for your date. I’d get that part settled before planning the rest of the visit.

Avalon from a couple of angles

From above town, the view opens up over tiled rooftops and palms to a harbor full of boats. Down by the water, you get another perspective, with the Catalina Casino building across the bay and boats scattered in front of it.

The hillside, waterfront and all that blue make Avalon such a pretty place to explore. If you’re planning your own visit, leave a little time to enjoy the scenery between whatever else you have booked.

A little cocktail break

There was a drink stop too, with two colorful cocktails on the table and palms outside. A little time to sit down fits right into an island outing.

You can take the ferry too

The ferry is another way to reach Catalina. Catalina Flyer sails from Newport Beach, while Catalina Express has departures from Dana Point, Long Beach and San Pedro. Book your ferry in advance and choose both your outbound and return sailings before building the rest of your plans.

For a closer look at the routes and departure points, read my guide to all the ways to get to Catalina Island.

Whether you arrive by helicopter like I did or come over by boat, give yourself some room to enjoy Avalon once you’re there. The harbor views deserve a little time of their own.
