There’s still room for one more October outing. If you’re planning around little kids, school schedules or a mix of ages, these six ideas give you a few different ways to spend the day without making every plan a big Halloween production.
Checked October 23, 2026. This guide covers the remaining October dates. “Kids free” doesn’t mean the whole family is free, so the adult-admission rules and extra costs are spelled out below.
1. Use Kids Free October at the San Diego Zoo
Animal-loving kids have through October 31 to use the Zoo’s October offer. A supervising adult age 18 or older with valid admission can bring up to six children age 11 or younger free. Eligible kids don’t need a ticket.
For families who want the glowing evening entertainment too, the remaining HalGLOWeen dates are October 23–25 and 30–31. Activities begin at 5 p.m. and the Zoo stays open until 9 p.m.
- Where: 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego.
- Cost: The standard adult Any Day 1-Day Pass is currently $78. Parking is $16 per standard vehicle per day unless an applicable member benefit covers it. Food and upgraded experiences are extra.
- Plan: No reservation is required for the standard Any Day pass. Use the date-specific calendar for daytime hours. Read the Kids Free rules, ticket options and parking details.
2. Book a daytime Birch Aquarium visit
For an ocean-focused day, Birch offers one free child ticket for ages 12 and under with each full-price adult ticket through October 31. Add both adult and child tickets to your online order and use KIDSFREE26. There’s a limit of six qualifying adult-child pairs per order.
This is a daytime admission offer, not a ticket to Halloween Aglow. The new Axolotl’s Garden is another reason to browse the aquarium’s current exhibits.
- Where: 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla.
- When and booking: Reserve a specific date and time online in advance. Check the daily schedule for that date’s closing time.
- Cost: A full-price adult ticket is required; check the qualifying total in the official checkout. The offer can’t be combined with other discounts or special events. Children must stay with an adult. Read the offer and reserve tickets.
3. Explore The Nat with its Kids Free coupon
If your crew likes animals, science or an indoor afternoon, The Nat is another October option. Up to two children ages 12 and under receive free admission with one paid adult when you show the offer at the admissions desk. Saturday Nature Studio runs 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
- When: Through October 31, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Nature Studio’s remaining Saturdays are October 24 and 31.
- Where: 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park.
- Cost and booking: Standard adult admission is $24.95. Show the coupon on your phone or bring a printout. Capacity limits apply. Kids’ films aren’t included and cost $5 extra per child. Specially ticketed events and Nat at Night are excluded. Get the offer and full exclusions; check regular admission.
4. Pick a Bates Nut Farm pumpkin-patch day
A pumpkin outing can stay simple: look around the patch, choose a pumpkin if you want one and decide which paid activities fit your budget. At Bates, patch admission is free, but rides, pumpkins and food are separate purchases.
- When: Through October 31. Weekdays 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; October 23 until 6:30 p.m.; October 24–25, 8:30 a.m.–6 p.m. Halloween closes earlier, at 5 p.m., with a 9 a.m. opening.
- Where: 15954 Woods Valley Road, Valley Center.
- Cost and planning: Weekday parking is free; October weekend parking is $10 per vehicle. Activity hours can end before the patch closes. Check individual activity restrictions before buying tickets. Read the 2026 patch details and Halloween hours.
5. Meet a raptor at a County Parks Hawktober program
These free, all-ages programs are a good fit for curious kids who would rather meet an animal than enter a haunted house. Rangers introduce live birds of prey and explain what makes them special.
- October 24: Otay Lakes County Park, 4–5 p.m., 2270 Wueste Road, Chula Vista.
- October 25: Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 11 a.m.–noon, 22135 Highway 79, Santa Ysabel.
- Plan: Some locations charge for parking. Keep kids with you and follow the ranger’s instructions. Check the official flyer.
6. Keep Saturday simple at Sip, Soar and Celebrate
For a free-entry family event without committing to a full attraction day, head to Plaza de Panama. The program includes entertainment, games, prizes and photo opportunities. Food trucks are listed too, so keep purchases separate from the free-admission promise.
- When: Saturday, October 24, noon–4 p.m.
- Where: Plaza de Panama, Balboa Park.
- Plan: The venue calls it family-friendly. Parking may cost extra. See official details.
