If you’re going to Fonda del Barrio, start with the tortilla soup and order a horchata. Those are the two things I’d put on your list before you even open the menu.
This Mexican restaurant in Barrio Logan feels like a little escape from San Diego. The hacienda-inspired space and the food reminded me of going out to eat in Mexico. Add a night with live music and you have a reason to make an evening of it.
The tortilla soup was one of my favorites
The Sopa de Tortilla Huasteca was probably one of my favorite things here. It has dried chiles and fresh herbs with crispy tortilla pieces and panela cheese on top. It’s such a comforting bowl of soup and so good.
If you’re deciding what to start with, that’s my pick. You can find it in the soups and salads section of Fonda del Barrio’s food menu.
And please don’t skip the homemade horchata. Fresh horchata with Mexican food is such a good combination.
The restaurant focuses on ancestral Mexican cooking with dishes from different regional traditions. Beyond the soup, its posted menu includes chicken with guava mole and Pescado Tikin Xic, a rockfish dish with achiote that is baked in banana leaves. Those are two options to look at if you want to plan the rest of your order before arriving.
Choose a night with live music
The space is a big part of why I’d recommend Fonda del Barrio. The restaurant has indoor and patio seating, so you can ask about either when planning your visit.
Live music is listed Wednesday through Saturday. If that’s what you’re going for, call ahead to ask about the performance time so you can plan dinner around it. The website lists the days but doesn’t give a nightly start time.
Planning your visit
Fonda del Barrio serves dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 4 to 10 p.m. It’s closed Mondays. Friday and Saturday bar hours continue until 11 p.m., but the kitchen closes at 10.
There’s also weekend brunch from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For current hours and table inquiries, visit the official Fonda del Barrio website or call the restaurant directly.
