There’s still time for a little October fun without another admission charge. These six free-admission ideas cover October 23–31, 2026, from live raptors and a Saturday block party to a slower afternoon with art and gardens.
Checked October 23, 2026. Free means admission to the activity described below. Parking, food, shopping and optional extras may still cost money. The last two picks are year-round places, not special October events.
1. Sip, Soar and Celebrate in Balboa Park
A daytime block party is an easy way to make Saturday feel like a plan. Southwest Airlines and Coca-Cola are bringing live entertainment, games, prizes and photo opportunities to Plaza de Panama. The venue lists this as a free, family-friendly event.
- When: Saturday, October 24, noon–4 p.m.
- Where: Plaza de Panama, El Prado, Balboa Park.
- Budget and booking: Free admission. Budget separately for food-truck purchases and parking. See the event details.
2. Meet birds of prey during Hawktober
For an outing with a nature twist, County Parks has free ranger-led encounters with live raptors. These are open to all ages. Pick a location rather than trying to squeeze several into one day.
- October 24: Lamar County Park, 9:30–10:30 a.m., 3180 Bancroft Drive, Spring Valley.
- October 31: El Monte County Park, 2–3 p.m., 15805 El Monte Road, Lakeside.
- Budget and booking: The program is free, but park parking fees may apply. Follow ranger instructions around the birds. Check the official 2026 flyer.
3. Try a Spooky Garden Party at Tecolote Nature Center
If a haunted attraction sounds like too much, this city event offers a simpler seasonal plan: crafts, activities and live animals. Costumes are encouraged. It’s a short afternoon outing rather than a whole evening commitment.
- When: Saturday, October 24, 1–3 p.m.
- Where: Tecolote Nature Center, 5180 Tecolote Road, San Diego.
- Budget and booking: Free admission. Call 858-581-9944 if you have accessibility or activity questions. Read the city listing.
4. Make Sunday a free concert day
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion has a free public performance on October 25 with civic organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez. It’s a lovely reason to slow down for an hour in Balboa Park.
- When: Sunday, October 25, 2 p.m.
- Where: Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park.
- Cost: Free public concert. Check the current program.
5. Browse the Timken Museum of Art
This is the flexible indoor option when you’d rather choose your own day. Admission is always free and walk-ins are welcome. Keep it a quiet gallery visit, especially if you’re bringing children.
- When: Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Remaining October dates are October 23–25 and 28–31.
- Where: 1500 El Prado, Balboa Park.
- Know before you go: No tickets required. Children under 14 need an adult. Strollers are allowed, but the museum has no public restroom. Review visiting information.
6. Take a Botanical Building break
You don’t need a ticketed museum day to enjoy Balboa Park. The Botanical Building is free, with plants to look at and the Lily Pond just outside. This is a year-round stop you can fold into an October afternoon.
- When: Daily, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., except city holidays.
- Where: Botanical Building and Lily Pond, Balboa Park.
- Budget: Free admission doesn’t mean free parking. Check current building information and Balboa Park parking guidance.
Keep the day genuinely budget-friendly
Pick one main outing, bring what you need for the day and check parking before you leave. Balboa Park currently has paid lots; its visitor information identifies the first three hours at Lower Inspiration Point as free. Follow the posted rules for the space you use.
One more distinction worth keeping in mind: October’s “kids free” attraction offers often require paid adult admission. Those can be a good family deal, but they aren’t the same as a free outing for everyone.
