November plans don’t all need a ticket budget. This month has a mix of art, music, a neighborhood festival and an early holiday evening. Here are nine places to start, with the little details that can turn “free” into an unexpected expense.
November 2026 guide. Checked October 27, 2026. Admission is free for the activity described, but transport, food and optional purchases are separate. The Nat’s museum day has residency or military eligibility rules.
1. Browse the Fall Back Festival in the Gaslamp
The Fall Back Festival brings an Old West-style children’s street fair to Island Avenue, with games and entertainment. You can also take a free self-guided tour of the Gaslamp Museum during the event.
- When: Sunday, November 1, noon–4 p.m.
- Where: 410 Island Avenue, San Diego.
- Cost: Free entry. An optional Food and Fun ticket unlocks additional activities. The nearby Park It on Market garage is paid. Read the festival details.
2. Browse the Carlsbad Village Street Faire
Make this your North County browsing day, with crafts, antiques and entertainment throughout Carlsbad Village. Admission is free, but leave room in the budget if the kids want rides or you spot something to take home.
- When: Sunday, November 1, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
- Where: Downtown Carlsbad Village. Follow Carlsbad Village Drive west from I-5.
- Plan: Food, shopping and rides are separate from free entry. Complimentary shuttles run from the Shoppes at Carlsbad and Poinsettia COASTER Station. There is no bike valet in 2026. See the Chamber’s event and transport details and Visit Carlsbad’s free-admission listing.
3. Use The Nat’s Residents Free Tuesday if you qualify
This one is for San Diego city and county residents, active military and their dependents. The Nat’s free day is a chance to explore the museum without buying general admission. Bring the identification needed to establish eligibility.
- When: Tuesday, November 3, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; last entry at 4:30 p.m.
- Where: 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park.
- Extras: Films aren’t included; they cost $5 per person. Parking and food are separate. This isn’t a free-admission offer for every visitor. Check eligibility and visiting rules.
4. Spend an afternoon at Cabrillo’s Fall Festival
A free neighborhood festival with outdoor games, crafts and face painting is a lovely excuse to get everyone out of the house. This one is at Cabrillo Recreation Center in Point Loma, not Cabrillo National Monument.
- When: Thursday, November 5, 4–6 p.m.
- Where: 3051 Canon Street, San Diego.
- Cost and ages: Free family-friendly event. The city listing does not specify an age limit or registration requirement. Check the city’s festival listing.
5. Visit an artist’s studio at Liberty Station
First Friday is a nice excuse to look at art instead of just scrolling past it. Artist Leslie Pierce opens And Something Different Studio Gallery for a behind-the-scenes look at her contemporary work.
- When: Friday, November 6, 4–8 p.m.
- Where: Barracks 19, Studio 202, 2690 Historic Decatur Road, Liberty Station.
- Cost and booking: The venue lists free attendance and free parking. Art purchases and classes are optional paid extras. Check the event’s signup link for entry details. Open the official listing.
6. Reserve a spot at The Old Globe’s tree lighting
Grinch cast members and a snowfall effect bring an early holiday evening to the plaza. It’s free, but reservations are required.
- When: Sunday, November 8, 6 p.m.
- Where: Copley Plaza at The Old Globe, Balboa Park.
- Booking: Book ahead. A standby line begins at 5 p.m., but entry isn’t guaranteed. Reserve through The Old Globe.
7. Catch the free UC San Diego screening of Hoop Like This
The San Diego Asian Film Festival is showing this basketball documentary at UC San Diego as a free screening. Be careful with the venue: the festival specifically says the free offer doesn’t apply to its UltraStar showing of the same film.
- When: Thursday, November 12, 7:15 p.m. The scheduled film length is 97 minutes.
- Where: Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts, UC San Diego, 9605 Scholars Drive North, La Jolla.
- Booking and extras: The organizer says no physical ticket is required. Arrive early for a seat and check campus parking separately. This isn’t being listed as a children’s program. Confirm the free screening, schedule and venue address.
8. Choose a Sunday organ concert
Spreckels Organ Pavilion’s public concerts are free at 2 p.m. every Sunday. November’s dates are the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The November 15 program is a tribute to U.S. war veterans.
- Where: Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park.
- Plan: Performances run about an hour. Check the program for your Sunday.
9. Save the Timken for a flexible art day
When a fixed event time doesn’t work, the Timken is a free-admission museum. It doesn’t require tickets, so this is an easy gallery stop to keep in your back pocket.
- Usual hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., at 1500 El Prado, Balboa Park.
- November exceptions: Closed November 11, November 16–20 for installation and Thanksgiving, November 26. It closes at 1 p.m. on November 15.
- With kids: Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a quiet museum setting. Check current hours.
The quick budget check
For Balboa Park outings, remember that free admission and free parking are different things. The park’s current visitor information lists paid parking lots and a three-hour free option at Lower Inspiration Point. Check the signs when you park.
