Solvang at Christmas 2026 A Weekend Plan for Lights and Danish Treats

If your holiday wish list includes twinkly lights, little shops and a pastry stop that turns into two, save Solvang for a Christmas getaway. The Danish-style village gives you plenty to wander through without filling every hour with reservations. The trick is picking the right dates, then leaving enough time to actually enjoy the town.

Pick your dates first

Solvang Julefest runs November 27, 2026 through January 3, 2027. For a weekend built around the major celebrations, December 4–6 is the one to consider. The tree lighting begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4 in Solvang Park, followed by the Julefest Parade on Saturday, December 5 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

If you prefer a simpler evening visit, the park’s light and music show runs nightly during the festival at 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Each display lasts about 10 minutes. The Wednesday Maker’s Markets are scheduled for December 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 3–7 p.m. Check the official Julefest calendar again before leaving, especially if one specific activity is the reason for your trip.

Official schedule

A relaxed Friday arrival

My suggested plan is to arrive with enough daylight to get oriented before committing to a busy evening. Start with a short walk, choose a bakery and figure out where you want dinner. On tree-lighting weekend, leave a generous buffer before the 5:30 p.m. start rather than treating it like a timed restaurant reservation.

Pack a warm layer even if the afternoon feels mild. A small bag, comfortable shoes and a charged phone will be more useful than trying to carry everything from the car. If you’re bringing family, decide on a meeting spot before the group starts browsing different shops.

Make room for the bakeries

Solvang’s tourism office lists five Danish bakeries within five blocks, including Olsen’s, Birkholm’s and Mortensen’s. That makes a pastry stop an easy part of the walking plan. Check each bakery’s current hours rather than assuming all the shops stay open until the evening lights.

For a group, I’d choose a few different pastries to share instead of ordering a full dessert at every stop. Leave a little room for anything that catches your eye later. You can browse the tourism office’s bakery guide before deciding where to start.

Plan Saturday around one main event

If you’re coming for the parade, make that your morning anchor and keep lunch flexible. Afterward, take your time with the village streets, shop windows and Danish-style architecture. The official self-guided walking tour includes the windmills, clock tower and Little Mermaid fountain, so there’s plenty to explore between scheduled events.

Parking and budget notes

Visit Solvang lists free parking and three public lots. That doesn’t guarantee an open space during a major event, so allow extra time and follow posted restrictions. Check your lodging’s parking arrangements separately.

Parking information

Julefest is a collection of activities, not one all-inclusive ticket. Check the individual event listing for admission or reservations, and budget separately for food, shopping and lodging. My suggestion: pick the one holiday event you really want to see, add a bakery stop and leave the rest of the day open for wandering.
