Are you going for candy and costumes or a night of scares? SeaWorld San Diego has both on the calendar, but they are two different events with different tickets and very different moods.

Halloween Spooktacular and Howl-O-Scream were both on my fall activities list. If you saved that roundup, here is the difference so you can choose the one that actually sounds fun to your group.

Spooktacular is the family-friendly option

Halloween Spooktacular runs Friday through Sunday from September 11 to November 1, 2026, and is included with regular park admission. Think a waterfront pumpkin area, character appearances and trick-or-treating, with a Baby Shark Halloween show and dance activities with Spookley the Square Pumpkin.

If candy is the main event for your little ones, keep the trail hours in mind. Captain Sweet Tooth’s Candy Trail runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays and 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. A reusable candy bag is required, and you can bring your own.

Costumes are welcome, but guests ages 13 and older cannot wear costume masks or hoods. SeaWorld also says face painting must be done by its park artists. The Spooktacular page has the dress-code details and the day’s activities.

Howl-O-Scream is for the after-dark scares

Howl-O-Scream runs on select nights from September 11 through October 31, 2026. Haunted houses, scare zones and nighttime entertainment make this the scare-focused option rather than a family trick-or-treat outing.

You need a separate event ticket. Regular daytime admission, Annual Passes and Fun Cards do not include Howl-O-Scream admission.

The event begins at 7 p.m., with entry allowed from 6 p.m. on your selected ticket date. Closing times depend on the night, so check the Howl-O-Scream calendar and content warnings when choosing a ticket.

SeaWorld does not recommend Howl-O-Scream for children under 13. Unlike Spooktacular, costumes and face paint are not allowed.

Choose the mood first

For a family day with costumes and candy, look at Spooktacular. For a group that actually wants haunted attractions after dark, look at Howl-O-Scream. Budget for parking, food and any optional extras alongside your admission.

SeaWorld is at 500 Sea World Drive. Once you know which Halloween experience you want, the rest of the planning gets a lot easier. Just make sure everyone in the group means the same thing when they say they want a spooky night out.
